New countries for both of us, these three nations threw highs after low after high at us. Each one beautiful in its unique way, we weren’t short of memorable experiences by the time we crossed into Bulgaria.
Plane graveyard by the side of the road in Romania. Had to stop for a quick look but it was guarded by a big scary dog so Mickey decided pics from the outside were good enough.
Inside the old forge in the field. Signs of another time.
Cow pat everywhere and despite best efforts I managed to walk straight through one.
Setting up camp at an idyllic spot in Borova Sihot, Slovakia.
Mickey tries on the bridge for size at the start of our jaunt into the Slovakian forests. We later found out there be bears in them thar hills prompting a slightly nervous walk home!
Every so often the forest would open up into stunning wildflower meadows. Barely a soul was in sight - blissful!
And the views over the meadows stretched for miles. I felt a bit like I was in the Sound of Music!
Getting tired now! On our way back to the campsite with newly endowed knowledge of potential bear proximity
We rounded a curve in the mountains to be confronted by this stunning vista. We pulled in to the viewing point car park and I promptly dropped my bike. It was worth it for the view though
And of course we then had to spoil the view ;)
The fields of sunflowers provided constant company from Slovakia to Romania and they just kept getting more and more vast
Pull in to check the map and have a quick look around
From here on in we're sharing the road with more than cars and bikes!
Beautiful little campsite in Gyula, Hungary. We passed a wonderful night here amongst the community of repeat visitors and in the company of the charmingly eccentric owner Marike
Romania presented us with stunning sights up in the mountains
...and big, big skies
Big skies give and endless variety of sunsets
Town Hall, Caracal, Romania. The city had an air of long passed decaying grandeur but this building gave an impression of how the rest of town might once have looked
This was a particularly beautiful example of the decay.
A communist era hearse? We weren't sure but Mickey was fascinated.
Deep in thought. I try and figure where we are, where we want to be and how we're going to get there.
We just had to stop and turn around when we rode past these fellas at the side of a Hungarian country road. The car behind us did the same and passed us a little later waving out of the window at us as they went.
Our digs in Deva for the night. Our first stop in Romania.
After having gotten ourselves onto a road that definitely wasn't motorway we could start to relax and take in the surroundings. Round one bend sat this imposing old iron works, now being allowed to fall into dereliction.
Recently locals had banded together to protect the building from total ruin and preserve this part of their history.
From the inside out
Parking for the night in our Romanian motel near Avrig. It'd been a hard day and after following several signs for pensions that yielded nothing and finding one only to discover it was full we opted for this motel
